There are a variety of ways to play games from the past across a variety of platforms, but one of my favourite methods is to use RetroArch. The technical definition to explain what retroArch is that it’s an open-source front-end retro gaming software to run emulators and the associated games and ROMs.
It’s all technical jargon, so in simpler words, what exactly is RetroArch? RetroArch (pronounced retro-arc) is software that lets you access numerous gaming platforms (emulators or cores, as they are called in RetroArch) or game (ROMs) for your console, computer and mobile devices. It has been continually developed since the year 2010 by Libretro Team and is built on the API for the libretto. It is long gone from the days when you required a console to play games. In the case of RetroArch, all you have to do is to boot it up and enjoy thousands of games in just only a few clicks. These games and systems are accessible through the RetroArch interface, which is completely customizable to meet the requirements of the user.

What Systems Can I Play Using RetroArch?
With RetroArch you are able to connect to an array of different systems. The initial installation of RetroArch does not come with any emulators, so it’s your responsibility to choose which emulators you’d like to download from the available options, and then connect to the file (on or on your machine or external storage devices) with the ROMs that work with the emulator you choose to use.
When you look through the vast selection of emulators available, it’s easy to realize how many options are available. The majority of cores are available for all systems that were released prior to the PS2 as well as the Original Xbox. The reason that emulators for the latter don’t exist at the moment is due to the reality that they haven’t been completely perfected. There are many instances where there is the possibility of different cores for every system. If you discover that a particular ROM isn’t running well with one emulator, then try another emulator to see if it has more success.
Keep in mind that the kinds of ROMs that you can play will depend on the specifications of the machine on which you’re operating RetroArch. For instance, if the system you are running RetroArch on a smartphone running it running the Ice Cream Sandwich operating system (Android v4.0) then the most modern system you’d like to run would be similar to a Sega Megadrive or SNES. If, on the other hand, you’re using RetroArch on a premium Windows 10 PC then you should not have issues using systems such as Sega Saturn or the N64 as well as Sega Saturn.
